about JBFC

The Janada L. Batchelor Foundation for Children, Inc. (JBFC) was founded in August 2005 by Chris Gates. After seeing the plight of street girls and orphans in the area, Chris knew that something had to be done to rescue these innocent children.

By May of 2006, JBFC finished its search for land in Tanzania and purchased its first piece of land in a village called Kitongo, a small village approximately 30 miles east of Mwanza on the southern shore of Lake Victoria. JBFC started building its first building in June of that year.

Today, JBFC has grown exponentially. Not only has the main campus in Kitongo grown to include 3 large houses, a dormitory, a dining hall, a cow barn, a large farm, and a large livestock area, but JBFC has recently merged with another organization, Amani Girls’ Home, in Mwanza and has taken on all operations of their campus.

Between JBFC’s two campuses, it supports 42 girls within its residential programs and has recently expanded operations to include outreach support services to provide support for youth living on the streets.

There are sadly over 150 children on the waitlist for the centers, and the need continues to grow daily.

In 2009, JBFC hopes to continue to develop its main campus in Kitongo by developing an English-medium Primary School and a medical clinic. These projects will not only improve the quality of education and health of the children within JBFC, but will seek to provide education and care for the greater community as well.
